Introduction……..On my “about” page I wrote “ You will notice that some familiar names are not included (in my website), notably Pattaya, Phuket and Samui. Nor will they be!!“. I lied, well sort of. In the first excursion out of Bangkok on my current visit to the Far East I am on my way to Pattaya. However I will refrain from expanded commentary on a subject which would need a book to do it justice. I will use Pattaya as a base for a few days for excursions. I am promised the use of a car a clear diversion from my regular transport modes. In addition my visit will coincide with the Loi Krathong festival, taking place this year on Wednesday 28 November, at full moon. Certainly Pattaya will cater for this regional spectacle in its customary extravagant way. First I need to get there.
Monday 26th November Pattaya by storm……I need to collect my netbook from Pranthip Plaza in Bang Kapi after an upgrade and an attempted recovery of lost data, a misfortune that will live with me for some time to come. OK by mid afternoon I am on my way to Pattaya by minivan (roht too). Inexpensive at 130 baht but, this vehicle, normally associated with rapid transfer by road takes well over 3 hours to make this straightforward journey. After frequent stops and negotiating a tropical storm in Chonburi and Si Racha it finally arrives in Pattaya at 6.30pm. It doesn’t take long for me to recognize this is not the Pattaya I used to know. I’m staying at an apartment near Big C in south Pattaya recommended by a friend. Suitably refreshed I draw up plans for the morning. Tuesday 27th November Anek Kuson Sala (Wihan Sian) (เอนกกุศลศาลา (วิหารเซียน))........Refreshment duly provided by 7Eleven I am offered the car until 6pm. I head south on Sukhumvit highway. First stop Anek Kuson Sala, 5 kms from the highway km 160. This art gallery with high-class Chinese architecture and fine arts was constructed in 1987 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Birthday. Inside is an exhibition displaying precious antiques such as the large white jade Bodhisattva Kwan Yin's image, terra-cotta soldiers and horses from the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, an emperor’s golden throne......., (Cont. on Page 2) |
