Koh Si Chang: unlikely destination. Page (1) | (2) | (3) | (4)
Day 2: Haad Tham Phang and south island……..(cont. from page 3) As the heat of the day recedes, there is still time to visit Leam Chakapong a promontory north of the beach: Ideal to view the sunset. But I head to the south of the island to Ta Yai Tim where I get a view of the small island Koh Kang Kao. There is nothing here for the visitor except the view and not worth paying for local transport. The island’s south also houses the islands rubbish tip and oil storage tanks. That’s it I’m done. Day 3: Last minute visits……..Today will undoubtedly be an anti climax as I make plans to leave the island. However the owner of Benjaporn has granted permission for me to keep the room till 2pm. That gives me an extra two hours. The girl who rented the motorbike is also flexible about its return. I head for Phra Luang, a large Buddha image gazing out across the town as if offering its protection. Beyond is the view back to Si Racha and the anchorage for countless cargo ships that has become the norm here. I revisit Chong Kao Khad, the viewpoint I visited on Monday and take more photographs. Finally there is a stone inscription in the town near the school. It records the early history of the island. Day 3: Back to Si Racha……..I head for the pier arriving just in time for the 2 pm boat service back to Si Racha. From the pier at Ko Loi unless you pre-order a minivan it’s a tuk tuk ride to Robinsons in Si Rachi which supports transport links to Bangkok’s Ekamai or Mochit by tour bus or Victory Monument by van. The later is the quickest option at 100 baht. On balance this island offered a lot more than I was expecting and a break from the noise and traffic of city life just 100 kilometres from Bangkok. However I guess for sun and sand worshippers it would be hard to get a 5-star rating. |
