The Mundok Central Market used to be a busy market although starting to recover after closure during Covid but since June 2023 there has been a drastic drop in Malaysian shoppers after authorities closed illegal jetties and unsanctioned routes to the marketplace. Then in July at least nine people were killed while dozens of others were injured after a fireworks store in a market exploded.
