Day 16, Thursday 27 February
No Change……..
Waking this morning I’m in no pain but as soon as I move there is little evidence that the pain has reduced to any great extent. I will just have to hobble around and get packing. By 9.30am we are ready to hit the road again. After an hour we are closing in on Chaiya where we’d hope to have been yesterday evening but the delay has had one positive effect.
Chaiya National Museum……..
Like other museums, for example the one we just missed out on in Songkhla, there is early weekday closing. Chaiya National Museum suffered in the same way on an earlier trip but this morning it is open. The logic of another delay is based on the fact that we’re now unlikely to gain any material advantage by arriving in Bangkok a bit later. The detour should take less than half an hour. Fortunately the Chiaya National Museum has only one level and relatively small so I’m able to hobble around without too much effort.
The significance of this museum is that it is located near Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya Worawihan a former royal temple. While this temple had been visited in another tour to Southern Thailand, the important history dating back to the Srivijaya period cannot be ignored. This area was important enough to rival any kingdom in the north. I’m hoping here to view some of the religious artifacts that have survived from this era, here at the museum.
Now for the online information: Chaiya National Museum located within the compound of Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya Ratchaworawihan temple, categorized as a historical, arts and archeology museum. Objective of the museum during early establishment is to collect artifacts founded in the Chiya district archeological site, by Master Phra Khru Sophon Jetikaram (IAM), former primate Chaiya. The museum consists of two buildings;
The first building divides its exhibition into 2 sections, which are:-
Section 1 puts on exhibition stone and bronze sculptures discovered in the ancient city of Chaiya, for example, sculptures of the God Vishnu and Bohdisattva Avalokitesvara.
Section 2 is the rotational exhibition for important occasions, such as Thai Heritage Conservation Day, Thai museum day.
The second building divides its exhibition into 5 sections, which are:-
Section i is a chorological exhibitions, which display artifacts from pre-historic, down to historic periods, from Dvaravati, to Rattanakosin era.
Section ii is Art objects and several other crafts related to Buddhism and Brahmanism are also displayed here. Including bowl, tableware, ornament, appliance that discovered from Wat Kaeo, Wat Long, and Laem Pho (archaeological sites).
Section iii display ancient arts of the Bhuddha image, silver and gold that people give to the image, and also a Grand shadow puppet play.
Section iv exhibits folk art objects and local fine arts, such as wood carving and woven fabric of the Phum Riang community.
Section v displays the eight necessities of a Buddhist monk, consists of Cho Por Lor 's porcelain set, pearl set, Thom pad set, brass set, which belonged to Phra Chayapiwat Suphat Sangpamok, who renovated Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya temple and Ven Somdej Phra Buddhacarya (Som Shanno) the abbot of Wat Suthat Thepwararam temple of the Phumriang people.

One Foot at a Time……..
It’s been another delay but as we’ve agreed before, we must make progress now, making only essential stops. The good news is that despite the pain in my left foot, this appendage is not used while driving an automatic vehicle and I’m able to make a significant contribution to the driving. By switching drivers, we now eat into the suggested 8 driving hours to Bangkok, along now better roads and not too much traffic. As darkness closes in, I hand the last stint into Bangkok in Samut Songkhram province. Thankfully the traffic flows reasonably well and we negotiate the toll way systems without trouble. This put us on an eta at 8pm. After picking up some food we arrive back at the residence which is after the sweat of this tour, not an unwelcome relief. The plan now is recovery and to do what I can to bring this tour to life with my blogs and photos.
Conclusion.
