Wat Phra Narai Mahara, Nakhon Ratchasima

Wat Phra Narai Maharat is a first-class royal temple situated within the old city walls. Looking around this temple you would not think it had any history. In fact, the viharn is modern; they have only recently started adding mural paintings to the plain interior. At the time of the visit, adorning the exterior were photographs and biographical detail regarding the current King Rama X who recently paid a visit here.
The status of this temple reflects it's historic connections. The Naranya Temple is home to four ancient Khmer-style Hindu images that were discovered here. The most sacred depicts the god, Phra Narai (Vishnu), placed at the centre. To its right sit smaller statues of Phra Phrom (Brahma) and Phra Isuan (Shiva), while an image of Ganesha is placed to the left. As well as Hindu style images there is one to Chinese-style Kuan Yin (goddess of mercy). On this site a temple dating from the late Ayutthaya period once stood. There is no visible evidence of that but apparently the Buddha image in the viharn covers an older one.
