City Pillar Shrine, Phitsanulok

Within Phitsanulok, there are a series of sacred icons; one significant that should not be missed is Phitsanulok City Pillar. Originally, it was a stone inscription buried beneath the Naan River, but later the item was moved to a museum. Due to the stone inscriptions’ removal, Phitsanuloks’ mayor during the time, authorized a new City Pillar be built in replacement. There was the gathering of government officials, citizens and a representative from the Fine Arts Department, suggesting thoughts on the new City Pillar. The new construction was to the west of Naan River and the City Pillar placed in the new shrine just opposite to the city hall. The pillar isn’t merely a sacred object, it is indicated the harmony of people on both sides of the River Kwai.

The construction employs the concept of a pagoda with 7 levels and has a base of 16.60 meters wide and 10.65 meters high. The sacred site was completed on April 8th, 1997 having Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn present at the grand opening ceremony.
