Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat Phrachomklao Rachanusorn is located in the remote Chae Hom district in northern Lampang province. Perched high up on jagged mountain peaks, a number of white-painted chedis are visible for miles around. Seemingly defying gravity they have been given the nickname ‘floating chedis’.
As an attraction Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat is quite new but because of its stunning location on an isolated peak it is fast becoming Lampang’s premier tourist attraction. While there seems to have been a temple here since ancient times the chedis seen here today are recent. It is believed that they were built in 2004 for the 200th anniversary of the birth of King Mongkut (Rama IV). It is known that a revered Lampang monk led the charge and a team of 46 workers, spending two years carrying bricks, mortar, cement and every piece of the temple up the mountain each and every day until its completion.
It is possible to make this a day trip from Chiang Mai or Lampang. Alternatively there is accommodation in Chae Hom but you are advised to secure it in advance. Either way you will reach a car park and wait for a pick-up truck. The final ascent is on foot but is steep via 700 metres of metal staircase; exhilarating and very rewarding for the views. There is a fee payable in the booth in the car park both for the transport and Park fees.
