Wat Chetawan is located to the west of Phrae near the River Yom. Its name suggests an abundance of fish in the river in an area of once virgin forest. In 1857 the abbot of Luang Temple in Phrae City organised a group of devotees to pioneer the construction of the temple. He invited an older priest from Thoen district in Lampang Province to be the first abbot. Later he joined with the faithful of Wat Chay Ta Wan to build the sanctuary and pagoda. It was built in typical Lanna style of red bricks plastered over with clay. The pagoda stood 14 metres high. In 1922 the sanctuary was reconstructed by which time the top of the pagoda had broken off. Complete reconstruction of the pagoda took place in 1967.
