Doi Phu Kha National Park is northern Thailand’s largest national park located in northeastern Nan Province and can be reached on Highway 1168 from the city of Nan. It is part of the vast Luang Prabang range. Important rivers such as the Nan and Pua rise in this park. The highest peak, Doi Phu Kha is 1,980 metres high. Another important rock formation is Doi Phu Wae, 1,837 metres. This remote location requires a 2-3 day trek. A number of interesting cave systems are also found within the park. The park is named after Chompoo Phu Kha (Bretschneidera sinensis), a tree with attractive pink flower bunches, which together with Caryota gigas and Acer wilsonii, are rare species of plant which in Thailand can be found only in this park. The park was established in 1999. Unfortunately some of the rare habitat has been destroyed by the greed of loc al officials.
