The original Sang-Ga-U village is no more. The sea gypsy village was swept away in the Asian Tsunami of 2004. Villagers tell of water passing through, a metre high. It could have been a lot worse. This area is largely protected by the reef. Today more substantial concrete buildings have been constructed on higher ground, no doubt with government help.
