Wat Khae, mentioned in the Thai literary epic “Khun Chang-Khun Phaen”, is home to a thousand year-old tamarind tree. In the story, it is believed that Master Khong taught the art of magic to folkloric protagonist Khun Phaen, who then transformed tamarind leaves into wasps and hornets to fight his enemies. Nearby the tree is “Khum Khun Phaen”, a traditional Thai house built as part of a literature and historical conservation park. The temple also houses special antiques such as replicas of the Lord Buddha’s footprints called “Phra Phutthabat Si Roi”. Other antiques include a brass bell, a brass boiler for boiling robe dye, and a Thai-style bookcase, which were donated in 1869 by King Rama V. The temple is located 2 kilometers north of Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat.
