Chainat (Thai: ชัยนาท) is one of the central provinces (changwat) of Thailand. Neighbouring provinces are (from north clockwise) Nakhon Sawan, Singburi, Suphanburi, and Uthai Thani. The town of Chainat is 188 km north of Bangkok. Geography: Chainat Province is low lying located in the basin of the Chao Phraya River. The province is small with only eight districts; Meuang Chainat, Manarom, Wat Sing, Sapphaya, Sangkhaburi, Hankha, Nong Mamong and Noen Kham. History: Chainat was first established during the Ayutthaya period and was used as a successful base of operations for confronting the Burmese army. As the Burmese were defeated every time, the area earned the name Chainat, "place of victory". Tourism: Despite its small size there are a good number of natural, historical, cultural and religious sites to visit in the province. Perhaps the most famous attraction is Chainat Bird Park. However, despite excellent transport links within the Chao Phraya basin area, Chainat is not one of the most popular tourist destinations. |
