Food for thought..... As I wake this morning preparing to return to Bangkok, I have a couple of minor issues to report regarding Skyview Hotel, and they involve my need to use my laptop. Firstly, I can't get a strong signal from the Wi-Fi and have to tether again to a phone with no connection problems there. Secondly, while there is ample space on the counter to work, the interior designers assume that putting a mirror and stool there would be more useful. OK, but for me sitting on a hard stool for any length of time is painful. What happened to the chair? Minor issues accepted, I've come very close to giving this hotel full marks. It's time to check out the breakfast, but where is the dining room? Last night we drove straight into a courtyard containing two rows of bungalows, most convenient I must add, but this is a hotel right? Well, there is a building I can see in the distance and that's where we are directed and that's different. I've never needed a 5 minutes walk before to go for breakfast, but that will certainly help to build up a apatite. We pass other accommodation types and reach the main building, a most impressive one indeed. There are positive vibes here for breakfast and so it proves. The buffet breakfast is right at the top of expectations for accommodation in our budget range. Here there is coffee, juice, rice, stir-fry, sausages, egg, toast and jam, and fruit. I think we can go all the day to Bangkok without food after this. So, all ends up well as I have a soft seat to sit on.
Departure..... The plan for today is so simple as I just need to visit the railway station before we hit the road. Unfortunately, preps today have been a bit lethargic and I just miss one train but record the next.
As we head towards Bangkok, there is a last minute change of plan. We could visit the plot of land in Nakhon Nayok which means a rather long detour be still better than making a separate trip. This means we will be joining HWY 304 which happens to go right into Bangkok near our residence. The route around to Nakhon Nayok is still messy though.
Deluge..... Throughout our stay in Buriram the rain has stayed away but having committed to the 304, intermittent showers arrive as we head into the high mountains of Thap Lan National Park. At this stage we are committed to go and view the land. In truth, there is nothing to see, but it will be my last and only chance to visit this time here. We now hit a heavy rainstorm but press on for the moment. These thunderstorms rarely last long, and you can emerge after 10 minutes, and it's bone dry. However, something feels different about this one as it becomes more violent with thunder and lightning flashing all around. It's only mid-afternoon but feels like night, lit up with a spectacular light show. With water washing across the road and visibility down to yards, I'm surprised Katoon doesn't stop the car but now later into afternoon we both realise than it's pointless doing anything more than take a early dinner and head for home as the light show persists. We return to the 304 and by the time we find a restaurant, the worst is over, but heavy rain shows no sign of easing.
Finally, there is the option of seeing some trains at Chachoengsao but traffic buildup at the end of the week now is the issue, and we focus only on getting back safely.
Relief..... We arrive at the residence at 7.30 pm. The zigzagging around as cost fuel and lost 3 hours, but I did see a train and actually did some shopping for dried goods to take back home which helps a lot during the final few days in Thailand. As far as this mini tour is concerned it's been a great success with a wonderful mix of events. Katoon would certainly think so, as she ended up with a sapphire ring for an anniversary present.
