Chanthanaburi Day 1 - 14 October 2024

Great Catch..... It was an exciting day yesterday after a quiet spell as I captured more railway activity at Bang Sue for my YouTube channel. Then, I just have to mention the captivating successful booster catch of Starship during Flight Test #5. Today won't be so nail biting, but we are off on our travels again. While none of my preferred objectives apply for the next three days this ensures there will be something different. However, a late change adds an extra day to ensure there will be something familiar to close out the trip.
As we prepare to depart, there is a reality check. Last night there was pain in my left foot and with no improvement overnight, I have to prepare for another gout attack, but I am prepared for it with medication. Although this is inconvenient, let's say that it could be worse as I have nothing pencilled in today, although Katoon does. To add to the situation, heavy rain is expected throughout the day so the best we can hope for is to reach Chanthaburi safely.
As we head east, we should reach a convenient point half-way to take lunch but we will already have deviated from a direct route to Chanthaburi. Katoon has identified something she believes important in Rayong. After a simple lunch, we go to investigate.
Wat Khot Thimtharam..... At Wat Khot Thimtharam it doesn't take long for we to find the old ubosot (ordination hall) which I believe is from the Ayutthaya period. The actual time of construction is in the late Ayutthaya Period, built by the Governor of Rayong. The 'bot' contains the image of Luang Por Khao. Finding this lovely old building I'm surprised we didn't come across it before when we were here exactly a year ago. Now it's time to complete the journey. We survive one thunderstorm and almost immediately run into another. This cancels out any thoughts of using a scenic route as we head straight for the hotel.
Bluebed Hotel..... We find Bluebed Hotel along an alley off Road 316 some way northeast of Chanthaburi. It's peaceful but not exotic with no attractions nearby. You definitely need a car here. The building looks classy and has recently been refurbished. So far so good but there is quite a walk from the car park to the C Building which I need like a hole in the head with my gout no better. Now let's see what the room is like. Well, ahhh, ummmh it's not exactly inspiring. Yes, the builders have done an excellent job with the decor but those responsible for fitting it out must have been on strike. Three nights we will have here mostly living off the floor. They have put in a counter here, but it's far too small for the size of the room. OK so I'm not impressed but bravo; the internet is fine if I can find space enough for my laptop.
It now remains for us to find a dinner and Katoon is reluctant to go into the city. That limits us to dine like the locals, and we eventually find a food court which is as cheap as chips. It's still early evening as we return to the room and do our best to feel comfortable if not homely. Katoon is happy to watch Thailand v Syria in the King's Cup while I have free rein on the internet. Going forward, I'm hoping for a quick improvement with my gout as I need to get to the city tomorrow as planned.
