Salt Wells, Bo Kluea Village, Bo Kluea District
Nan Province

Bo Kluea is a district (Amphoe) in the eastern part of Nan Province, northern Thailand. The small mountain village roughly 100km northeast of the northern Thai city of Nan or 45km from Pua , has been tapping into a plentiful local resource for over 800 years. Percolating to the surface from local wells, an endless supply of saltwater has created a strong local economy based around salt; which has even been used as a form of currency when bartering with neighboring village communities. The saltwater is extracted from wells in an age old method; simply a bucket and a winch. The liquid is first pumped into holding tanks and then, when needed, into large metal pans above firebrick kilns where the liquid is boiled allowing the salt to accumulate before being ladled into baskets and later stored. The entire economy of Bo Kluea is dependent on salt production and tourism.
